Editions and printings of the Scientific American 'Amateur Telescope Making' series. One interesting situation is the continued publishing during WWII, possibly to supply the 'Roof Prism Gang'? The number printed in each printing would also be useful in tracing the activity of ATMs. Of course, what would be of real interest would be a itemization of what articles are in earlier editions, & were not included in later, larger editions ('lost' articles). ------ Amateur Telescope Making, (1st ed., 1st printing but not so labeled), 1926. 102 pages. Richmond, Va.: Willmann-Bell, 1996. 3 vol. ======================= All I was able to get from Scientific American were the negatives from the last printing. As it turned out we did not use them. From what I have seen Ingalls added and subtracted from one printing to the next. --Perry Remaklus -------- With respect to changes with the various editions: My 1957 ATM Book One, 4th ed., 13th printing, (and my 1976 22nd Printing) has an editors note on page 464 explaining how Part XII was "added three decades after the first edition". Part XII is "The Beginner's First Telescope" by James L. Russell and spans 27 pages. Also an editors note in the preface refers to the note on p.464 and addition of Part XII in 1955. It appears that the very nice annotated bibliography "Books for the Amateur's Collection" listing (as in my 1941 Forth edition) was dropped in order to add this section for the beginner but I have no editions between 1941 and 1957 to compare. --Steve Stayton -------- One guess is that the interim dates ('41 and '45) are where content was added, and that a copyright was routinely added on the year it was printed, whether or not new content was added. They may not have felt a need to claim an additional copyright when content was removed. When I was reviewing Perry's compilation/reorganization and comparing a few items with my own editions, I found a couple of things missing from my first printing of the 4th edition (that were in my late printing). --Ken Launie home page: http://www.europa.com/~telscope/binotele.htm
